Lake Metroparks – long one of the crown jewels of Lake County – celebrates 50 golden years of excellence in conservation, education and recreation. Travel through time to discover how the park district began, journey through the past five decades and learn about exciting future plans.

In the beginning…

Community concern grew as the population surged in Lake County after World War II. Half a century ago, visionary citizens of Ohio’s smallest county began campaigning to set aside land for future parks. To conserve and preserve the natural resources of Lake County, the Lake County Metropolitan Park District was formed in 1958.

Fast forward to today…

Lake Metroparks consists of 41 properties totaling 7,640 acres owned, leased and/or managed by the park district. Portions of two state designated wild and scenic rivers – the Grand and the Chagrin – flow through and are protected by Lake Metroparks. In addition to protecting watersheds and open space, Lake Metroparks annually provides more than 2.5 million visitors with countless recreational and educational experiences at diverse facilities including an agriculturally themed park, a nature center, a state-of-the-art wildlife center, two golf courses, over 41 miles of trails including a 4.8-mile paved bike/hike trail, five parks on Lake Erie’s shoreline and a cross-country ski center.

What does the future hold?

The Environmental Learning Center, Gulley Brook Corridor, the Outdoor Skills Center, Pleasant Valley Park, and improvements to existing Girdled Road Reservation, Erie Shores Golf Course and Pine Ridge Country Club. Lake Metroparks protects unique places and precious natural resources, helping to keep our land, water and air clean. The park system provides
more than 2,000 programs, activities and events every year, providing educational experiences for learners of all ages and teaching lifelong recreation skills. Enjoy your Lake Metroparks throughout this milestone anniversary year and celebrate the joys of today, the memories of yesterday and the hopes of tomorrow.
