Citizen Scientists are trained volunteers who help gather biological data for the park system by monitoring and inventorying the natural areas of Lake Metroparks.
Citizen Scientists are vital to the park system. The information gathered from these projects assist with habitat management throughout Lake Metroparks and furthers research with many partners groups across the United States.
With your help, many projects receive the attention they need and help us better understand the natural world.
Job Profiles
Bluebird Nesting Box Monitoring
Job location:
Penitentiary Glen Reservation

Qualifications: Dependable, Good at keeping records. Knowledgeable or willing to learn about birds.
Duties:
Monitors assigned bluebird nesting boxes on a minimum weekly basis during the bluebird nesting season. This includes removing house sparrow nests and eggs, taking measures against parasites, and reporting on the development of young and predator problems.
- Data is recorded and turned in to project supervisor.
- Attends scheduled meetings for bluebird volunteers (usually 3 per year).
- Works under the supervision of the
Interpretive Naturalist.
- Must have a volunteer application on file prior to working.
- Must wear volunteer badge while monitoring.
- Represents Lake Metroparks and its staff in a positive manner at all times.
- Communicates all safety, personal and public concerns/comments to Interpretive Naturalist.
Requirements: Must complete a LMP volunteer application and attend an orientation session.
Training: Completes orientation and training sessions conducted by Interpretative Manager if needed.

Butterfly Monitoring

Duties:
- Monitor butterflies along a predetermined route (transect) on a weekly basis April through October.
- Data is recorded and turned in to project supervisor.
- Works under the supervision of the Interpretive Naturalist.
- Must have a volunteer application on file prior to working.
- Must wear volunteer badge while monitoring.
- Represents Lake Metroparks and its staff in a positive manner at all times.
- Communicates all safety, personal and public concerns/comments to Interpretive Naturalist.

Lake Metroparks Eagle and Gold Award Scout Projects
- Bluebird nesting box kits: Cut pieces for bluebird nesting box kits out of lumber. Wood provided if available.
- Non-native plant removal: Manage a work group to remove non-native plants from sensitive plant communities. Oversee quality of work and safety.
- Large bat house: Construct a 7-foot tall by 7.5-foot wide bat house. This is an extensive, detailed project for a group with construction skills and time resources. Plans provided, some materials may be provided.
Other projects:
- Block unauthorized spur trails that damage natural habitats, by building brush piles.
- Remove graffiti on trails, update trail markers, map unauthorized trails.

Scouts Service Projects
Help Lake Metroparks natural areas, while earning credit for your service or conservation badges. As volunteers, you scouts can assist the parks with hands-on projects in the outdoors. Pre-set workdays are established each summer, and sessions can be arranged for groups of more than 15.
Lake Metroparks welcomes your group to contribute to the stewardship of park natural areas. Litter cleanups, non-native plant removal or special projects are available.
