Companion Dog Patrol

The Companion Dog Patrol and Hiking Patrol began in 2007. Many of our visitors enjoy the parks by foot; many of those with their canine friends. This is a perfect opportunity for the largest user group in Lake Metroparks to get involved and help keep the parks enjoyable for everyone.

Companion Dog PatrolMembers are taught how to handle themselves in all situations they will encounter in the parks. They study the park rules and regulations and how to recognize when those rules are not
being followed. They learn how and when to contact a Ranger and how to conduct themselves in those situations as well as everyday settings. They undergo training to safely handle themselves in all situations while in
the parks.

Requirements:

Companion Dog Patrol (CDP) "teams" (consisting of CDP members and their dogs) must meet certification requirements including the Canine Good Citizen.

The CDP has these requirements because

  • Teams will encounter many different ordinary situations while meeting park visitors and must behave, as teams, calmly and professionally.
  • Teams may encounter emergency situations, so the dogs must respond calmly and obey instructions in circumstances that would be very stressful for untrained dogs.
  • Teams represent Lake Metroparks and set an example for other park users with dogs.

Companion dog certification test

Demonstrating confidence and control, the dogs must pass the following test annually. This test, an extended version of the test in the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program, involves the dog, its handler, and an evaluator.
