Lake Metroparks Farmpark harvests four national awards at the
2007 Cleveland
Botanical Garden Flower Show

Our Big Backyard
2007 Cleveland Botanical Garden Flower Show

Lake Metroparks Farmpark’s entry into the 2007 Cleveland Botanical Garden Flower Show harvested four national awards.  The display, entitled Our Big Backyard, focuses on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the importance of responsible gardening practices to better protect the environment and ensure a healthier future for all.  This farmhouse backyard contains examples of IPMs such as use of beneficial insect companion planting, soil enrichment, proper pesticide usages, and choosing suitable plants that are pest and disease resistant.

Specific garden features demonstrating these themes are a water trough (responsible use of pesticides protect ground water purity), raised garden beds (fertile earth begets healthier more disease resistant plants), examples of shade trees to replace ash (dealing with Emerald Ash Borer).  The display was designed and installed by staff from Lake Metroparks Farmpark.
