Spring Art Show - The Alchemy of Art by Giovanni Bocchieri
Penitentiary Glen Reservation
March 29 through May 25, 2014 • FREE • 9 am to 5 pm

Let local artist Giovanni Bocchieri take you on a creative journey “in the shadow of Leonardo” in this one-man show featuring leaf alchemy, paintings, jewelry and more.

The use of contrasting textures and patterns as well as vivid color imagery allows the viewer an ever-changing aesthetic exploration. His extensive travels in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean have given him exposure to diverse styles of art which have significantly influenced his own approach to drawing and painting.

Artwork by Giovanni Boccieri is available for purchase.

Grand River Canoe & Kayak Race
Harpersfield Dam to Hidden Valley Park

This is an annual springtime tradition. Experience an 8½-mile canoe and kayak race from the Harpersfield Dam (Ashtabula County) to Hidden Valley Park (in Madison) on the wild and scenic Grand River. Annual tradition features a “maddest hat” contest.

School’s out for Spring Break. Looking for a fun family experience? Stop by the Nature Center anytime between 10 am and 4 pm. Visit the Nature Center for scavenger hunts, seasonal craft, outdoor x-plorer packs, hiking, hands on exhibits, the Wildlife Center, live animals and much more. Naturalists are on-hand to answer all of your nature related questions and to help guide you through the day. Visit the Nature Store; refreshments are available. All ages welcome.


Earth Day 2014
Penitentiary Glen Reservation

Pack a picnic lunch and bring it with you to Lake Metroparks’ Earth Day celebration! Enjoy the “First picnic of the year” in a clean and safe park. Join in the fun with hands-on activities, games, and demonstrations focusing on efforts to help protect the Earth.

We are all responsible for caring for our natural environment. This has been the concept of Earth Day since its beginning in 1970. Lake Metroparks continues that focus with its Earth Day events to celebrate our successes that help the Earth, and make a commitment to learn and use new ways to make our planet a healthier place. Discover what you can do to help the environment and learn valuable tips as you participate in hands-on activities.

Railroads in the Parks
Farmpark
May 3 & 4, 2014 • 9 am to 5 pm

The Visitors Center will be filled with operating model train exhibits. Both HO and N-Scale modular layouts will be on display. Other featured exhibits include G-scale trains, Lionel O-gauge trains, Lego train layout, Farmpark’s G-scale Garden Railroad layout in the Courtyard and displays on agriculture and the railroad. Children may build a wooden train for an additional $2 fee. The wooden train interactive play area lets the youngest railroad enthusiasts play engineer.

HorseFest 2014
Lake Metroparks Farmpark
May 17 & 18, 2014 • 9 am to 5 pm

Discover the magical beauty of horses at this two-day equine extravaganza showcasing the versatility and history of the horse. Watch as many different breeds of horses participate in a variety of activities and demonstrations for all ages to enjoy. HorseFest features training techniques, riding disciplines and a variety of uses for these versatile animals. The event will include Mounted Unit team, driving breeds, dressage, exhibitors, pony rides ($4), children’s activities, and much more!

Shearing Weekend

Join us as we shear our sheep of their winter coats and process it into a variety of fiber products. Learn how to spin and weave and make felt. Watch our Border collie in action herding sheep.

Competitive events include track & field, bowling, swimming, softball, bocce ball, horseshoes, shuffleboard, table tennis, billiards, archery, basketball, tennis, and cycling. That’s not all; events also include a variety of fun games that are entertaining and enjoyed by all! Track & field events held Saturday at Perry High School. WILD about Freshwater Mussels

Freshwater mussels are not only fascinating but they are also an essential component to our environment, holding great value for humans and nature alike. They are important environmental indicators, helping us understand the true health of our planet. Join mussel experts and enthusiasts at a workshop focusing on these amazing and greatly diverse creatures in Ohio! Registration required • $20 per person

Working Dog Weekend
Lake Metroparks Farmpark
June 7 & 8, 2014 • 10 am to 5 pm

Join us as canines of all shapes and sizes demonstrate the many ways they have assisted and entertained humans throughout the years. See demonstrations by Buckeye DockDogs, police canine units, the Skyhoundz Frisbee dog demonstration and much more. Once you’ve seen the skill with which these canines work and play, kids (of all ages) can try their “paw” at guiding the blind or Flyball, Frisbee and agility. Hey kids! Bring your favorite stuffed toy dog and march with it in the toy dog "parade of breeds". Take your favorite toy pooch to the “Working Dog Weekend Pet Hospital” for a check up. All kids may create a dog toy to take home. Meet the breeds, talk to handlers and trainers plus discover the many sports and activities you can enjoy with your four-legged friend.

28th Annual Amateur Photography Contest Show

Lake Metroparks is pleased to announce the 28th year for this contest/show, which is designed to capture the beauty of nature in Lake County through the lenses of amateur photographers. Categories are: Lake Metroparks, Wildlife, Landscapes and Floral, Black & White, and Lake Erie. New category this year: Geology. A separate junior division will feature the work of photographers ages 14 and younger. ALL photos must be taken within Lake County.

22nd annual Lighthouse Triathlon / Kayak Triathlon

Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park
July 27, 2014 • 8 am

Triathlon begins with swimming 500 meters (the length of the Fairport Harbor and back) or kayaking three kilometers. The second leg is a sprint to participants’ bicycles set in the parking lot, and a 20K race through Fairport Harbor Village and Painesville Township. The third leg features a 5K loop run through the streets of Fairport Harbor Village. Athletes will cross the finish line at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park.

Super Star Party

Have fun with astronomy while looking up into the sky at the annual Super Star Party. It’s a celebration of astronomical proportions! Stargazers of all ages can catch a good view of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Also, see the moon, planets, stars, and solar system with telescopes and expert guidance provided by the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society (weather permitting).

All aboard for a ride on a miniature steam engine as you take the “Red Light Express Train Ride.” Trains are provided by the Lake Shore Live Steamers and ride times are selected at registration. Train rides are weather permitting. Stop by The Nature Store for “out of this world” gifts.

Halloween Hayrides

Family-oriented fun. Rated PG-5 on the “scare meter.”
Halloween Hayrides feature a narrated hayride along a trail filled with family-oriented thrills, chills, and adventures. Encounter upside down skeletons, falling spiders, and a lagoon with a mysterious creature! Many “fright” sites will leave you with goose bumps or giggles!

After riding on the wagon, visitors continue their journey with a walk along a haunted trail through Festival Field. The ‘Evolution of Dance’ featuring the glowstick dancers is back again by popular demand! Dress for the weather -- rides go rain, snow or shine!
Tickets must be purchased in advance; tickets go on sale September 2.


Magical Whooloween

The Wild Days of Winter Game

Open Christmas Eve noon to 3 pm; closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day

Play along on the magical indoor winter wonderland at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. Get in the action of The Wild Days of Winter on a life-sized game board. Take a turn and move along from space to space, and discover through interactive play the many things that nature gives to us in winter. Activity pages, crafts, refreshments available. Snowshoe rentals weather permitting. Visit the Nature Store for all your holiday shopping needs.


Country Lights

November 28, 29, 30 and December 3 through 23, 2014 • 5 to 9 pm

Build a wooden toy in Santa’s Workshop, enjoy a wagon ride through thousands of lights; visit Santa in his sleigh, wander through model train and old fashioned toy displays; visit with Farmpark animals, and enjoy special presentations. Dinner and snacks available in the Café; no reservations required.
Tickets must be purchased in advance; tickets go on sale November 3.
