Lakes, ponds, rivers and even rain—water is captivating. The world abounds with prose espousing the virtues of just watching water. And, arguably, one of the most popular aquatic highlights are waterfalls. Flanked by hemlocks, the deep ravines of southern Lake County frame several delightful waterfalls. Some of these cascades are easily accessible, while others require a bit of a hike to view them. This list touches on our favorite Lake Metroparks’ waterfalls.
A short walk (includes a hill and steps) leads to a view of one of the largest waterfalls in Lake Metroparks. Paine Creek flows under the Paine Road bridge before spreading out into a large, two-tiered, fan-shaped waterfall. A wide and deep plunge pool collects the water before sending it downstream.

A mill built at the site of this large waterfall used to be a hub of early industry in Concord. From 1846 until the mill burned down in 1893, a variety of products including manure, hay forks, wooden bedsteads and chairs were manufactured here. Today, the forest has reclaimed the waterfall and this stretch of Jordan Creek, creating one of the area’s most scenic waterfalls. The waterfall can be accessed from the Greenway Corridor, either by parking at the Old Stone Schoolhouse in Concord Township or from the Environmental Learning Center. The trail to the waterfall overlook point is a natural surface with a steep grade.

A short jaunt along the Gorge Rim Loop Trail and a 141-step descent into the gorge reveals a lovely waterfall along Stoney Brook. A small bench invites hikers to stop and enjoy the serenity of the area, listening to little more than the water and the birds.

A right-hand turn after following the Bluebell Valley Path down the steps and to the bank of Mill Creek will lead hikers to a large, fan-shaped waterfall. This same path in April is livened by one of the best wildflower displays in Lake Metroparks.
