Birding Etiquette

  • Posted February 24, 2021

by Andy Avram, Interpretive Manager

Raptors (owls, hawks, eagles and falcons) are one of the most popular groups of birds to observe. Lake Metroparks provides many opportunities to view these magnificent creatures in their wild habitat. To ensure both people and birds have a positive encounter, we recommend following established birding etiquette:

  • Practice restraint to minimize disturbance to the birds.
  • Do not play their calls or other sound recordings.
  • Give plenty of space to birds in their nests and winter roosts.
  • If a bird changes its behavior, then you are too close. Look for these signs:
    • Raptors stretching their bodies to appear long and thin
    • Raptors watching your every movement
    • Flushing (flying away)

By observing our raptors with minimal disturbance, we help ensure their safety and survival and increase the opportunities for everyone to view and enjoy them!
