Lake Metroparks provides lifeguards and concessions at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park during the summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Although lifeguards are not present, swimming and wading is permitted at other parks unless otherwise posted. Lake Erie access is available at Lakeshore Reservation and Lake Erie Bluffs; river and creek access is available at a variety of parks throughout Lake County.

Kindly remember that swimming/wading is not permitted in ponds throughout the park district.

Safety first!

Please use the buddy system and be careful since swimming/wading is always at your own risk. Follow the recommendations below from the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep your family safe and injury free this summer.

Sun Safety

  • Prevent sunburn and sun damage by dressing your family in cotton clothing with a tight weave, sunglasses and hat with brim or bill.
  • Stay in the shade when possible.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours and after sweating or swimming.
  • Keep plenty of water on hand when you are exercising or playing outside.

Water Safety

  • Never leave children alone near open bodies of water, even if they have completed swimming lessons.
  • Home swimming pools should be surrounded by a four foot-high, non-climbable, four-sided fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate.
  • Parents, caregivers and pool owners should learn CPR.
  • Equipment approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, such as life preservers and life jackets, should be kept poolside.

  Insect Safety

  • Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom.
  • To remove a visible stinger from the skin, gently back it out by scraping it with a credit card or a fingernail.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET with needed to prevent insect-related disease.
