The Great Lakes have long been the subject of folklore, legends and mystery. The shores of the lakes have been inhabited for thousands of years; therefore, many tales have been passed down from generation to generation. These stories were used to teach, to instill a healthy fear of the lakes and to explain the world around them.
Some of the most impactful for our area are the stories of the LE Griffon, Bessie and Wendigo. The ghost ship Le Griffon vanished in 1679 and is said to appear to new Lake Erie sailors to warn them of the dangers of the water. Lake Erie’s own 30-foot lake monster Bessie has been documented by sailors and fisherman for more than 300 years (think Loch Ness Monster in Lake Erie). Then there’s the Native American legend of Wendigo, a beast that roams the Great Lakes searching for humans to possess.
Spend the night exploring the lore and mystery of the Great Lakes as we sample local wines from M Cellars and enjoy a four-course meal with chicken a la Tosca, baked salmon or eggplant cutlets (vegan) as an entree. As the mighty wind blows across the water, dive into what Great Lakes inhabitants saw, felt and believed about this amazing body of water. Take a lit stroll to the pier and if the weather is right, explore the lakefront trail, you never know what you many see on the water!
